New Report: Perceptions of pay gaps in the UK

WeCalibrate and Organise’s survey of 10,000 workers across the UK reveals something stark: UK workers overwhelmingly believe that big companies should report on more pay gaps. Over a third of staff think publishing pay gaps will promote transparency and accountability, and believe that companies should do more to pay staff fairly.
Underlying these calls for increased pay gap reportings are:
- Calls for increased transparency – staff want more transparency over pay scales both internally and in advertised roles
- Desire for increased accountability – staff want to see more accountability when pay gaps are found within the organisation.
- Request for increased fairness between highest and lowest paid staff – staff want to see a more equal distribution of pay between the highest and lowest paid staff.
This comes at a time when the UK Government has launched a fresh consultation into mandatory ethnicity and disability pay gap reporting for large companies.
It’s clear that staff across the board are looking for greater transparency, accountability and fairness when it comes to pay. This growing demand reflects an increasing recognition that equity in the workplace requires a fuller picture that can be painted by data. Pay gap reporting isn’t just a compliance issue – it’s a trust issue.
We encourage organisations to listen carefully to their staff, and consider how increased reporting could enhance trust within their organisations. Companies that take proactive action will build trust and drive real progress toward fairer workplaces.
